LENDING MONEY
At some point in your stay in Rwanda, you will probably be asked for money by all manner of persons: from street children who sidle up to you and ask Amafaranga? (âMoney?â) to your Rwandan colleagues and professional acquaintances. One reason for this is that, in many Rwandansâ minds, an umuzungu is someone who is rich. If asked for money by someone with whom you have not established a trusting relationship, always remember the importance in Rwanda of preserving face. Avoid an outright no, which could embarrass the other person. Instead, you may answer with a smile that you need money, too, and wouldnât life be easier if things were cheaper? In this way, you indirectly defuse the request. This also helps to avoid creating a sense of financial inequality, or a needs-based relationship, and it preserves face.
